It is so easy to become distracted from trying to spend time with God at times, isn’t? In a life that causes us to get so caught up in being busy or in pleasing others, it is not that difficult to lose focus. But GOD is a PRIORITY and somehow we must make time to spend time with THE ONE who gives us LIFE. To be honest, the more time we spend with God, talking to Him, and listening to Him is less time spent on worry and stress or other unnecessary distractions. Let’s recall the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42. Jesus and His disciples stopped by the house of Mary and Mary in Bethany. Martha became distracted with trying to prepare a meal for the guests while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus. Martha became quite frustrated and asked Jesus if He even cared that Martha had left her to prepare a meal alone. “But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42 NIV). This story should make all of us ask ourselves, “Do I have my priorities in order?” Are we really putting God first in our lives? Are we spending time with Him on a consistent basis? How is our prayer life? For in these things, we come to know God on a deeper and spiritual level. Many of us invest more of our time into people and things that really mean us no good or people or things that just don’t matter. We become so engulfed with pleasing others rather than pleasing God. Spending time with God does please Him. Putting Him first does please Him. When God is placed as a priority in our lives, things will fall into place. Our troubled days won’t be so troubled anymore. Our lonely nights won’t be some lonesome anymore. I know that many of us have families to take care of and guess what? It is a great thing to spend time with the Lord as a family and then to have your personal time that you spend with the Lord. Any which way it goes, God should be a priority in all of our lives. –S.L.M.
